Chapter Six

This morning is different than the other mornings so far; Mina's phone has not gone off and her mother has not come to knock on the door. Slowly Mina rises and stretches out her body. She glances over at her phone and then turns it back on, well that explains why the phone wasn't making any noise. A bunch of dings and voicemail alerts come across in rapid succession. Mina rolls her eyes and just looks at me and shrugs her shoulders. She tosses the phone to the foot of her bed and then goes about her normal morning routine.

I'm guessing Mina has had quite enough of everybody's bullshit lately. Wait till she sees this morning's news, I'm pretty sure she's going to be pleased with what happened last night. After about fifteen or twenty minutes she emerges from the bathroom freshly showered and dressed and she finally goes and touches her phone. A barely audible “oh fuck” escapes her lips. Apparently the red-head does have a name, and her name is Dana. She's the first little one that Mina start speaking about. She flips on the news and we watch it together, oh, well it's not really news to me I was there.

She just shakes her head and looks down at me, shrugs her shoulders again and then tilts her head to the left studying me now. "You know Poe, it's quite interesting that since your arrival most of my enemies has met their demise. Mom says you're my familiar, I'd like to believe that that's the case and that somehow you're fixing my life for me. Though if I told anybody else my thoughts, they would have me in a straight-jacket locked away in a hole so deep that nobody would ever find me. If this is your doing, thank you. For once I'm not living in fear. For once I don't have to worry about my stepfather trying anything inappropriate with me in the middle of the night. Those damn bitches, got exactly what they had coming to them. So if you do have any birdie magic thank you for using it for me." Mina leans down and kissed the top of my feathered head.

I never realized until just now that my girl has a sadistic streak. She looks all meek and gentle and kind. But deep down she's just like the rest of us, she doesn't want to be abused or taken advantage of but feels powerless to do anything about it. I don't know if it's just this generation or the way the media makes it, that you're afraid to defend yourself or stand up for yourself.
